Sheep in the Big City – Cincinnati Recreation CenterPosted: March 30, 2011
The initial impression of the University of Cincinnati Recreation Center from the photographs was of suspended heavy masses. The ceilings and overhangs seemed to be composed of large monolithic volumes punctured by only a few fluorescent lights or apertures that allowed minimal light to enter the spaces. From the photographs, it was difficult to see how the programmatic spaces connected to each other. On site, we confirmed that it took some exploring to figure out the circulation paths. The materials of the building were quite reflective, making the rooms appear more spacious, yet retained the feeling of heaviness.
